Terrain Database Development

Hummingbird Computing develops custom terrain databases and 3D real-time models for use in simulations.  We currently support MultiGen Inc OpenFlight,  MetaVR Inc.,  Modular Semi-Automated Forces (ModSAF) Compact Terrain Database (CTDB) and Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED) formats. 

Hummingbird Computing Inc uses state of the art commercial tools to create terrain databases from terrain elevation data, such as National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) Digital Terrain Elevation Data (DTED), United States Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Elevation Model (DEM), AutoCAD files, and satellite gray scale images.  Photographic images or Textures are then applied to the 3 dimensional elevation model (frequently called a "terrain skin").  Models of trees, bushes, roads, telephone poles, radio towers,

and buildings are located on the 3 dimensional elevation model.  Buildings, bushes, roads, trees, and other man made structures are frequently referred to as "features."

The 3 images above were captured using Hypersnap, Shareware screen capture utility, during the construction of an actual terrain database.   The top image shows MultiGen Creator with Power and Terrain Options being used to place individual trees and bushes on a textured 3 dimensional elevation model. The next image shows a small bush that is being constructed using MultiGen Creator and the final image shows a warehouse being worked on.

For large terrain databases Hummingbird Computing Inc. uses MetaVR's World Perfect to assemble the digital elevation models, the digital feature data, and geospecfic imagery into an OpenFlight, MetaVR MDX, and CTDB terrain databases.

Hummingbird Computing Inc uses OpenFlight as an intermediate storage format for terrain databases and individual 3 dimensional feature models.
